Michael T. Brennan is a Senior Attorney with Cortez & Associates, PLLC, bringing a rare combination of legal and medical training to his practice. He focuses his practice almost entirely on the defense of healthcare organizations and their providers in malpractice claims.
Licensed to practice law in Michigan since 2006, Mike began his career in commercial litigation, focusing on complex disputes involving automobile suppliers and commercial contracts. He developed a strong foundation in litigation strategy before transitioning his practice to transactional work. Mike went on to concentrate in real estate finance and banking law, representing financial institutions and business clients in high-value secured lending transactions, including syndicated credit facilities, commercial mortgage loans, and real estate development projects.
He later expanded his expertise by earning his Doctor of Medicine degree. His dual background in law and medicine provides a distinct perspective in representing healthcare providers and institutions, particularly in matters involving medical malpractice, regulatory compliance, and healthcare operations.
After graduating medical school, Mike has served in key in-house roles within the healthcare industry. As Associate General Counsel for a Medicare Advantage organization, he advised executive leadership on regulatory compliance, privacy matters, and employment issues. He also served as General Counsel and Medical Advisor for a diagnostic healthcare company, where he provided legal and strategic guidance across regulatory, contractual, and product development matters while collaborating on scientific initiatives.
Mike earned his Juris Doctor degree magna cum laude from Michigan State University College of Law, where he participated in the Trial Practice Institute and received multiple academic honors, including awards for excellence in criminal law, evidence, and tax. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Oakland University William Beaumont College of Medicine (OUWB), graduating in the top quartile of his class and earning membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Supply Chain Management from Michigan State University, graduating with high honors.
Mike was recognized by his peers as a Michigan Rising Star in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016.
He resides in Troy, Michigan, with his wife and two daughters. In his spare time, he enjoys coaching youth soccer.
